How to Protect Your Power Sport and Off Road Vehicle from Harsh Weather

Yes Drive

Living in Canada means dealing with unpredictable weather—from freezing winters to scorching summers. These extreme conditions can be tough on your Power Sport and Off Road vehicle, but if you protect your off road vehicle from harsh weather, you can keep it in great shape all year round. Here are some simple tips to help protect your vehicle, no matter the weather.

Yes Drive: Here to Help All Year Round

1. Store Your Vehicle Properly in Winter

Winter weather can be harsh on vehicles. Freezing temperatures, snow, and ice can cause rust and other damage. If you can, store your vehicle in a garage or shed to keep it dry and safe. No indoor storage? Use a waterproof tarp to cover it. This helps protect your ride from rust, ice buildup, and the wear that winter weather can bring.

2. Check the Battery

Just like we mentioned in our previous article, cold weather can drain your vehicle’s battery. If you’re storing your ride for the winter, take the battery out and keep it in a warm, dry place to stop it from freezing. Before you use your vehicle in the spring, make sure the battery is fully charged and working well.

3. Clean and Dry Your Vehicle After Each Ride

Riding through rain, snow, or mud can leave salt and grime on your vehicle. Over time, this can cause rust. After each ride, wash your vehicle with a hose to remove dirt, then dry it completely. Pay close attention to spots where water might collect.

For added protection, consider using a wax or protective spray on your vehicle. This creates a barrier against dirt and moisture, which is especially helpful for wet or muddy rides. It's fun to ride 'em hard - but please don't literally put it away wet.

4. Protect Your Tires from Temperature Changes

Extreme cold can make tires stiff, reducing their grip on icy surfaces. Heat can cause tires to wear down faster. Regularly check your tire pressure and look for signs of wear, especially after riding in tough weather conditions. Well-maintained tires are key to a safe ride. If you’re using a snowmobile, make sure the tracks aren’t worn or damaged. Replace them if needed.

5. Inspect Your Vehicle’s Fluids

Fluids like oil, coolant, and brake fluid help keep your vehicle running smoothly. Cold weather can make oil thicker, which affects how well your engine works. Hot weather, on the other hand, can lead to overheating. Check your fluids regularly and top them up as needed before heading out.
